Spitfire At Fairhaven Lake

The Boys family has a proud military tradition. Grandad Barratt was a RAF mechanic during WW2 and was posted in Germany (Wuppertal & Ludenscheid), and later in Liege, Belgium in 1945.

Lytham St Annes was the family home and Grandad Barratt became an accomplished steam model maker. He made many things, including half beam, full beam and vertical beam engines, a traction engine, and a scale steam trawler boat which he used to sail on Fairhaven Lake.

Since 2012, a Spitfire has been mounted lakeside in memory of the RAF airborne crew and the town’s contribution to the war effort.

Following his own national service post-war, Brian Boys became a keen military enthusiast, building a large collection of military vehicles over the years.

Recently, to mark the 75th anniversary of D Day, with the kind permission of the Spitfire Display Team, Fylde Borough Council, and VBA coastal defence contractors, members of the Boys family were able to drive some of the military vehicles onto the green below the Spitfire at Fairhaven Lake.

It was a fitting tribute to family members and all those who took part in D Day.
